Why does www.abetterguelph.ca exist?
On January 24th, 2011 Guelph city council was presented with an option to conduct a community survey. This would be part of the upcoming strategic plan. As most people know, I voted against this survey at this time.
My reasoning was that we just came off the campaign trail and most councillors should have the pulse of the community. I also felt that it was important to have strong financials attached to questions. That way, the residents would know what the economic impact could be on important issues.
I want to be clear that council as a whole has spoken in favour of this survey and I welcome the results. I am sure that there will be very useful information collected for us to use through the 600 person telephone survey.
However, my mind raced later that evening with a few questions.
1. Could informal or formal surveys, questionnaires or polls be done about a variety of topics?
2. Could informal or formal surveys and opinions be gathered through one central place?
3. Can't we have polls done more often using staff resources already inplace?
And so, www.abetterguelph.ca was born.
